Sleep training, nights 3 & 4
Night 3
By the time night three rolled around, I was feeling more confident that this process just might work. So, after Jemma woke up (immediately!) after being rocked to sleep for the night, I decided to try the Ferber method for her bedtime as well. It took 45 minutes (starting with the 5, 7, 10, 12 intervals), but she finally fell asleep.
During the night, she woke up at 2:30 a.m. I thought maybe trying sleep training at bedtime would have an adverse effect on our night-time wakings, but it didn't! I was up to waiting 7-minutes before going to her the first time. And guess what? That's the ONLY time I had to get up! I went in, put in her plug, patted her and went back to bed. She whimpered a bit, but then, silence!
Night 4
I started sleep training for bedtime, but she was going strong and both Brad and I needed some quiet after long work days. We took the risk of messing stuff up, and Brad rocked her to sleep.
Jemma had a restless night (well, I did too, for that matter! Guess I need sleep training as well...). I have a feeling her lack of naps during the day played into her bad night. She woke up at 1:30 a.m. OUCH! The schedule called for 10 minutes, but I dozed a bit and waited 12 instead. That's all it took, and she was back to sleep after I went in.
But, she wasn't done. She also woke at 4:30 a.m., at which time I decided to go ahead and nurse her. And again around 6:30 a.m. But after the long night I had, I wasn't ready to start my day. By that point, I had retreated to the basement for a couple hours of shut-eye after putting J back in her crib about 4:45 a.m.
I'm hoping the restlessness will cease for both of us on night 5!

Maybe someday Jemma will be this relaxed! |
