Let's be SOCIAL

Rethinking the 1st day

Last year at the start of school, I remember thinking..."Next year. I only have one year." And then I pushed those thoughts aside and again got busy with the whole mothering thing, including adding our little guy.

Summer came, and I thought..."Only a couple more months." And again got busy with the mothering thing...going to the pool, breaking up knock-down, drag-out fights...you know, the normal.

Last week came and lots of 1st-day photos popped up on Facebook, and I thought..."Thank goodness I have one more week." And I went back to the mothering thing...only with a lot more stress and a lot more emotion.

The weekend came and my L&P column was due, and I thought..."Perfect timing for a school article." And I went on to write all that was on my heart...my oh so breaking heart.

And then her first day came. And I'm doing OK. She was full of excitement, and I had processed through all my sadness, so I got to be truly excited for her as well.

While we will miss her every day and while it will definitely be a time of transition, it feels good knowing she is ready, excited, and best of all, in good hands. Not only her outstanding teacher's hands, but my Heavenly Father's hands.

In VBS this year, the kids learned a song that says, "Don't worry about anything, instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need, thank Him for all He has done." I LOVE that reminder...and it's a catchy tune, too.

It's glorious to let go of my fear and worry and declare that battle over. So for all those kiddos out there, "May the Lord bless you and keep you, may the Lord's face shine on you and be gracious to you, may the Lord look upon you with favor, and give you peace." (And peace for the parents, too!) Amen.

  1. She looks like she is in the same classroom I was in as a Kindergartener! Oh, how I miss those days with Celia Gross! Love her still. She kept up with us through the years and that has meant so much.
